My first contact with the facilities in Kayseri was quite positive. I was immediately impressed by the hotel—comfortable rooms, fully equipped gym, a pool, and a restaurant offering a wide selection of healthy food. The lobby is a pleasant space for players to socialize, and all tournament information is easily accessible.

On our first session at the courts, the altitude was the first thing I noticed. We’re at 2000 meters, right at the base of a ski resort. The thin air makes breathing difficult and sustaining cardio over long periods a real challenge. The courts are relatively fast, but not excessively so, probably because they were just finished a week before the tournament. The tennis balls, unfortunately, aren’t ideal. They are Artengo balls, which get very light and fast after just two or three games, adding to the challenge of playing in high altitude.

During the session with Stefi, we made some adjustments to her footwork, focusing on creating better space and transferring energy more efficiently to the ball. We also tweaked her serve mechanics, emphasizing weight transfer and incorporating breathing techniques to help her relax the upper body before serving.

Afterward, we hit the gym for core work and stretching, while I did some cardio on the treadmill. The altitude definitely makes you feel it.

I had a brief but pleasant chat with Jamie Kirkman, Zarina Diyas’ coach. We joked about sharing a glass of red wine, but it seems that will have to wait since there’s no alcohol served at the hotel.

Dinner was a great time, spent with Patricia Tig, Briana Tsavo, her father/coach, and Albert Portas. We enjoyed some engaging conversations and laughs.

Later, Stefi and I had a deep conversation about managing emotions on court and the challenges she faces when things don’t go as expected. We touched on the difficult aspects of life on the tour—the loneliness and the constant pressure of competition can be a tough combination.

Now it’s time for some rest and to prepare for another day in the life of a tennis player on tour.
